Dhanteras – Diwali, the festival of lights, begins with Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi and Dhanvantari Trayodashi, which last for five days. Dhanteras falls in Karthik month on the Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar and is regarded as a good time to buy gold jewelry, coins, and steel utensils. It marks the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha.
Dhanatrayodashi derives its concept of buying jewelry directly from its Sanskrit name, in which the word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and the word ‘Teras’ means thirteen. It is believed that buying something new would bring home prosperity, making their home environment conducive for welcoming Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth.
